Sports and School Physicals

Sports and School Physicals

Whether your child is joining a school football team or you’re training for a triathlon, a sports physical provides the reassurance that you’re fit and ready to participate safely. These health checks are not just about ticking boxes—they help prevent injury, identify underlying health issues, and support peak performance.

At our clinic, we provide thorough sports and school physicals tailored to your age, activity level, and sporting goals. Our experienced clinicians offer practical advice and medical assessments to ensure you, or your child can enjoy physical activity with confidence.

A sports or school physical is a medical exam that evaluates whether someone is healthy enough to take part in physical activity. It is often required by schools, sports clubs, gyms, or competitive event organisers before participation is allowed. While the focus is on physical readiness, the appointment is also an opportunity to review general health and well-being.

We provide physicals for:

  • School children needing medical clearance for PE or team sports
  • Teenagers entering sports academies or competitions
  • Adults returning to exercise or taking on new challenges like marathons or triathlons
  • Anyone wanting to monitor fitness and injury risk

Our sports and school physicals include a comprehensive health review and physical assessment:

  • Medical History – We ask about previous injuries, family history of cardiac or musculoskeletal conditions, past illnesses, asthma, allergies, and current medications.
  • Heart and Lung Assessment – We check heart rate, rhythm, blood pressure, and listen to your lungs to rule out undiagnosed cardiovascular or respiratory conditions.
  • Musculoskeletal Check – We examine joints, flexibility, posture, and muscle strength to spot any biomechanical issues that could lead to injury.
  • Vision and Hearing – These may be tested to ensure there are no issues that could interfere with safe participation.
  • Growth and Development (in children) – We assess height, weight, and pubertal development as part of the overall evaluation.

If required, we can also perform urine tests, ECGs, or blood tests, depending on the type of sport and level of competition.

We can update vaccinations during your visit if your child’s immunisations are due, and provide letters or forms needed by schools or sports organisations. If any issues are found, such as signs of asthma, joint instability, or heart irregularities, we’ll guide you through the next steps, whether that’s further testing, treatment, or referral to a specialist.

We also offer guidance on injury prevention, warm-up routines, hydration, nutrition, and safe training practices tailored to your sport or fitness level.

Physicals don’t just meet a requirement; they help protect athletes from harm. Many conditions, like heart murmurs or overuse injuries, can go unnoticed until physical activity triggers a problem. Early detection allows us to manage issues before they become serious and help individuals train and compete safely.

Whether it’s your child’s first school sports day or your own return to running, our physicals provide reassurance, expert insight, and a clear path to safe participation.
