Stitching and Suture Removal
Stitches, also known as sutures, are a common method used to close wounds and surgical incisions. Whether you’ve sustained a cut from an accident or undergone a minor procedure, having stitches applied and removed by trained professionals is vital for proper healing and reducing the risk of infection or scarring.
At our clinic, we offer a full range of wound closure and follow-up services. Our clinicians are experienced in assessing wounds and choosing the most appropriate method of closure—whether that’s sutures, skin glue, or steri-strips (butterfly stitches). We also carry out safe, gentle removal of stitches once the wound has healed.
When Stitches Are Needed
Stitches may be necessary when a wound is deep, continues to bleed, has jagged edges, or involves muscle or fatty tissue. They help bring the edges of the skin together, promote healing, and minimise scarring. Wounds on areas that move a lot—such as joints or the face—often benefit from stitches to prevent reopening during healing.
If you come to us with a new injury, our clinicians will clean the wound, assess its depth and location, and determine the best closure method. We use sterile, single-use equipment and follow strict hygiene protocols to minimise infection risk.
In some cases, skin glue may be a better option for small, shallow wounds, especially in children. Steri-strips are ideal for minor cuts where the skin can be easily held together.
Aftercare and Healing
Once your wound has been closed with stitches, we’ll provide clear instructions on how to care for it at home. This usually includes:
- Keeping the wound clean and dry
- Avoiding strenuous activity or stretching the area
- Watching for signs of infection such as redness, swelling, discharge, or fever
- Using pain relief if needed
We’ll also let you know when to return for stitch removal, which usually happens between 5 and 14 days depending on the area of the body and the type of wound. Stitches on the face are often removed sooner than those on the legs or back.
Removal of Stitches
Stitch removal is a quick and straightforward procedure that we perform with care and precision. Using sterile instruments, we gently cut and remove each suture, taking care not to pull or tug on the healing skin. You may feel a slight tugging sensation, but the process is typically painless. We then inspect the wound to ensure it has closed properly and shows no signs of infection or complications. If necessary, we can apply a fresh dressing or recommend scar-reducing treatments to support the final stages of healing.
Follow-Up and Scar Care
We believe in complete aftercare, so we offer advice on managing scars, including moisturising treatments and sun protection to help the area fade over time. If the wound needs further support—such as physiotherapy for joint movement or referral to a plastic surgeon—we can arrange this quickly.
With skilled wound closure and attentive aftercare, we help ensure your skin heals cleanly, comfortably, and with minimal scarring.
